The Prime Minister (PM) Pham Minh Chinh assigned the Deputy Prime Minister (DPM) Le Van Thanh to direct careful checking the content of Power Development Planning VIII (PDP VIII) with a target to ensure a suitability of practice and national interests, especially to remark anti-negativity in policy establishment.  PM also paid attention to careful studying electricity prices, reasonable structure of power plants (hydro, thermal and renewable power plants) and balance between regions to avoid wasting social resources.

According to draft version of PDP VIII: the total installed capacity of power plants in Vietnam by 2030 is 137.2 GW, among which, coal thermal power occupies 27%, gas thermal power – 21%, hydropower – 18%, RE power – 29%, import power – 4%, Pump storage and other energy storage – 1% (while the maximal demand capacity (Pmax) of National Power System is 86.4 GW, so the total installed capacity of the power plants is higher Pmax by 50.8 GW equal to 58.8 %).

In 2045, the total installed capacity is 276.7 GW including coal TP 18%, gas TP – 24% Hydropower – 9%, RE power – 44%, Import power – 2%, Pump storage and other energy storage – 3% (while Pmax of National Power System is 153 GW, leading to difference of total installed capacity above Pmax by 123.7 GW, equal 80.8%).
