It is our pleasure to invite you to join us at the seminar “5 years of implementation of the CPTPP: Vietnam as a gateway for businesses to scale up and access ASEAN” which will be held on 12th September, 2023 in Quebec City.

Co-organized by the Vietnam Ministry of Industry and Trade (Vietnam Trade Office in Canada), the Research Chair on New Challenges of Economic Globalization (Université Laval) and the Canada-ASEAN Business Council, the seminar aims to evaluate the CPTPP’s five years of implementation and the best course of action for maximising its benefits in the new context of the Indo-Pacific Strategy and the upcoming Canada-ASEAN free trade agreement.

ASEAN region is the fastest growing economic region in the world and will be the consumption gravity of the world by 2030 with 660 million of consumers. ASEAN is now the 5th largest economy of the world and quickly emerges as a new global hub for trade, exchange and innovation. Vietnam has been a good and significant partner for Canada in ASEAN for 50 years. Vietnam has consistently been the top ASEAN destination for Canadian goods thanks to a growth rate of 7% over a 30-year period, and it can serve as a capital gateway for Canadian companies looking to grow in the region. Affinity in language and culture gives Quebec companies a comparative advantage when doing business in Vietnam.

The most updated policies to help Quebec companies tap on to grow up and go global will be shared by speakers from the government, academia, and business from Canada and Vietnam.

Professor Frederic Lasserre from the Université Laval will give a presentation on the Indo-Pacific Strategy of Canada and Quebec, focusing on how it might improve Canada’s economic links with the region as well as how the trade and investment pillar will be implemented. The results of the CPTPP’s five years of implementation will be presented by Dr. Quynh Tran from the Vietnam Trade Office in Canada, who will also discuss how Quebec businesses may use it to better source, sell, and partner in ASEAN.

Professor Richard Ouellet from Laval University will delve into a topic of significant economic and political relevance: economic integration and free trade in the Indo-Pacific region. His presentation aims to provide an overview of these critical aspects that have a substantial impact on the global economic landscape.

From a business viewpoint, Executive Director TB Nguyen of the ASEAN-Canada Business Council will examine why ASEAN has been the destination of choice for her members to remain competitive and hedge risk for decades and how ongoing trade agreements with the region might open up new potentials. The CEO of Aldo will also discuss the company’s achievements in Vietnam and ASEAN to inspire Quebec businesses to take advantage of the region’s growing business prospects.

The seminar is one of events honouring the 30th Anniversary of the Vietnam Trade Office in Canada and the 50th Anniversary of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and Canada, as well as an excellent occasion to tightening the two countries’ economic ties.

Seminar will be held from 15h30-18h30, on 12th September, 2023 at : Salle le Cercle, Pavillon Alphonse-Desjardins (4th floor), Université Laval, Quebec City; and followed by a cocktail reception. Seats are limited and by confirmation only.
