Registered capital from foreign direct investment in Vietnam was just over US$3.4 billion in April, the highest monthly increase this year. This brings Vietnam’s total FDI in 2023 to US$8.88 billion.

Vietnam also recorded 228 new FDI projects, spread across 50 countries, bringing the total number of new projects for the year to 750.

Japan led foreign direct investment in Vietnam in April with 22 new projects and an additional US$1.6 billion. This could be attributed to the purchase of Vietnam’s VP Bank by Japan’s Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group. Japan was followed by Singapore with US$509 million added and the USA with an additional US$217 million.

Hanoi was the best-performing province in terms of FDI in April. With an additional US$1.55 billion it was well ahead of the next biggest FDI drawer card, HCMC, which received US$482 million.

In April, the financial, banking, and insurance activities sector pipped the long-time leader, manufacturing and processing. The former pulled in US$1.5 billion in April and the latter saw an additional US$1.16 billion. In third place was professional, scientific and technical activities which brought in US$283 million.
