Can Tho City is one of the five centrally-governed cities in Vietnam, located in the heart of the Mekong Delta’s key economic region. Can Tho is the most modern and developed city in the Mekong Delta region, located in the downstream area. The city stretches over 60 km along the west side of the Hau River and is 169 km away from Ho Chi Minh City to the southwest.
- The city plays a central role in connecting the Mekong Delta region, which is an important hub in the Mekong transport network. Cai Cui port and Can Tho port play an important role in the entire region, receiving cargo ships of 10,000 tons to 20,000 tons, which are capable of handling 4.5 million tons of cargo a year.
- Over the past six years, Can Tho has always been at the top of the country’s Provincial Competitiveness Index (PCI). In 2016, Can Tho was ranked 5th among the top 10 most attractive investment destinations of the country selected by enterprises. In 2017, Can Tho ranked 10 out of 63 provinces in the PCI.
- The food processing industry develops on a number of strengths such as abundant sources of locally provided raw materials from farming, animal husbandry and aquaculture. Other factors include an abundant and cheap labour force, a large and expanding market and favourable conditions to develop supporting industries to serve the localities in the Mekong Delta.
- Supermarkets and trade centres continue to attract consumers. The presence of big national and international corporations such as Co.opmart, Big C, Vincom Plaza, VinMart, Lotte Mart and Sense City, alongside modern and comfortable shopping space creates a commercial infrastructure system that meets the demand of supplying goods to many localities in the Mekong Delta.
- At present, Can Tho has import and export relationships with about 80 countries and territories. The city now has more than 10 major export commodities that can compete in the global market, including rice, seafood, garments, handicrafts, salted eggs, footwear, leather, feathers and steel.
- Can Tho City has diverse and characteristic tourism activities such as ecotourism and cultural and historical tourism. With the most developed infrastructure in
the region, along with a system of restaurants, hotels and centres for convention, MICE tourism is growing in recent years. - The city is aiming to become a national-level plain city and the center of industrial, trade and service education, science and technology, health care and culture of
the region. A number of investment support policies have been implemented, such as the improvement of administrative procedures in the one-stop shop, shortening time for the issuance of investment certificates, the reduction of vocational training costs and advertising expenses for new businesses.
